Colleague Spotlight: Katie Broadhurst, Group People & Culture Manager

What is your role at The Tibbetts Group?

“As the Group People & Culture Manager, my role is all about helping to create a positive, safe and inclusive environment for everybody within The Tibbetts Group.

“We’ve recently repositioned HR to become our new People & Culture department; we’re on a mission to evolve our offering and expand with modern, user-friendly ways of working. The bigger we get as a business, the more important that becomes.”

How long have you worked at The Tibbetts Group?

“I’m brand new! I arrived around a month ago, and it’s been a really great experience so far, meeting with loads of friendly people across all areas of the business.”

What is your favourite aspect of your role?

“I love to get involved in all parts of the business; I’m very interested in seeing how businesses work. I enjoy exploring how people have an impact on business success, and I think that the People & Culture function plays a unique role in that aspect.”

Are there any significant projects which you are currently working on?

“Loads! We have so many value-add projects on the go. I’m really keen to showcase what a great employer Tibbetts is. By recognising and celebrating the great things which happen here, I’d love for us to be honoured with an employer of choice-type of award.

“I’m also looking at investing further in our Learning and Development opportunities across all parts of the business. There’s lots going on, but those are the two big areas which I’m focusing on.”

Have you worked in this role throughout your career?

“After leaving school, I decided to do a qualification in Business & Finance, but I soon discovered that it was the HR and people-related work which I was best at and most enjoyed. I then went on to do a degree at Wolverhampton in HR because that really piqued my interest. I’ve worked in this area ever since, and I’m still enjoying it 30 years later.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

“Outside of work, I’m really family orientated. We love to go on weekends away, we love holidays, and we’re all a bit obsessed with crazy golf. Every new place we visit, we hunt out the best crazy golf and we’re all incredibly competitive at it!”

Do you follow a sports team?

“Both my son and my husband are season ticket holders at Tottenham Hotspur, so whilst my life is taken up by Spurs, I’m not really too interested.

“I’m a bit obsessed with Darts though. My friends and I went to watch the Darts a few years ago, and it was such a great night out. We dressed up as the Addams family, and it was incredible. It’s growing as a sport; I think Luke Littler has really made a difference recently.”

What is your favourite film or television genre?

“I love a rubbish Christmas movie. We’ve got a strict rule in my family: the more predictable, the better. We like to predict the plot from the moment it starts. We start watching Christmas movies from around October. We’ll get Halloween out of the way, and then it’s full-on every Sunday. We love any of the Hallmark type movies, but my particular favourites are classics – The Holiday, and Miracle on 34th Street.”

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

“We’ve just come back from a cruise along the Norwegian Fjords, which was beautiful. We first went on a cruise last year, and the kids loved it. We’re looking at going somewhere completely different next year, Canada is on my radar as I’ve never been there before.”

What’s something that you’ve always wanted to try or learn?

“I’d like to learn to play the piano. I don’t know why though because I haven’t actually got a musical bone in my body – but I’d love to own a grand piano. I’m always jealous when I see people playing an instrument, or speaking another language.”
